This club, which is Chicago’s most exclusive, was originally founded in 1892 and was listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. It was also recognized in “GOLF Magazine’s” 1995 list of “The First 100 Clubs in America.” Members claim that since the course opened in 1895, it is the oldest eighteen hole course in the country. The 1897, 1900, and 1911 U.S. Opens were held here and were won by Joe Lloyd, Harry Vardon, and John McDermott. “GOLF Magazine” also rated it 23rd best among the “Top 100 Courses in the U.S.” for 1995 and 1997, and 20th in 1999. “Golf Digest” rated this 18th best out of “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” for 1995-96, and 35th best for 1997-98. The same publication also rated it as the 2nd “Best in State” for the years 1995 through 1998. “GOLFWEEK” ranked it 16th among “America’s 100 Best Classical Courses” for both 1997, 1998 and 1999. The old, links-style course features wide fairways and large greens. The terrain is fairly hilly, so you can expect some uneven lies.
