This well-maintained course is the oldest municipal course in the U.S. It was named to “GOLF Magazine’s” 1995 list of “The First 100 Clubs in America.” Built as a nine hole design in 1885, it was expanded to eighteen holes ten years later. Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Willie Nelson, Willie Mays, and The Three Stooges have taken turns hacking away on this legendary design. The layout is known for its long par 5’s, particularly hole #2, which measures 620 yards. Despite this, it’s a forgiving design with tree-lined fairways that are wide open, and large greens that are fast. Sand bunkers can be found on every hole. Several new highways have been cut through the course requiring some reconfiguration of the original design. Therefore, it is not comfortable to walk nine holes because the ninth green is located a long way from the clubhouse. Some players call it quits after hole #14 because it’s closer to the clubhouse than #18, and to avoid playing holes #15 through #18, which are known as the “hill holes.”
